5 Facts About Tourmaline
- First things first, what is tourmaline? Well, tourmaline is a broad term used to group together crystals with a similar structure otherwise known as crystalline boron silicate.
- What colours does it come in? Tourmaline comes in a wide variety of colours. So many, in fact, that it is one of the most colourful stones on the planet. There is, for example, the very popular watermelon tourmaline (green on the outside and pink on the inside), red tourmaline (rubellite), green tourmaline (chrome tourmaline), etc.
- Fun fact: Tourmaline happens to be one of the few gemstones where colour bands ADD to its value.
- Where can it be found? Tourmaline is mined all around the world, from the US, Brazil and Canada to Nigeria, Mozambique, Zambia and Afghanistan.
- Why is it perfect for jewellery? Because, in addition to the generous array of colours it comes in, tourmaline is a hard stone (7 to 7.5 on Mohs scale of hardness, where 10 is diamond and 1 is talc). This toughness makes it ideal for jewellery.
