Behind the Gems: The Ruby Dreamcatcher

Welcome to another edition of “Behind The Gems”, our monthly series that takes you on an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of our signature collections.

Today we’re taking a look at a special, one-of-a-kind item: the Ruby Dreamcatcher.

The Idea

We’ve always wanted to create a whimsical statement piece of our own. At the same time, we knew that contemporary technology was something we would like to look into. So, the Ruby Dreamcatcher was the perfect piece to try including 3D printing in our jewellery production workflow.

The Production Process

As usual, the entire process was kicked off with pen and paper. Esther carefully sketched the pieces and perfected the designs.

Then, the designs were sent to be translated into a 3D model.

The 3D model was then printed in hard wax.

Next, an imprint was made in silicon before the actual piece was cast from 18ct gold.

Once cast, Esther finished the piece by filling off the rough edges and created the settings for the three droplets.

Then the piece was sent off to the setter to be encrusted with rubies and diamonds.

Finally, the pendant was sent back to us to be polished and for the chain to be attached… et voila! The Ruby Dreamcatcher was ready to shine all on its own.

The Outcome

The resulting necklace is dripping in rubies and diamonds and radiates indulgent luxury:

  • 18ct yellow gold pendant - approx. 4.25cm in diameter
  • 70cm 18ct yellow gold double chain
  • 1 ruby cabochon - 5mm diameter
  • 20 diamonds totalling 0.36ct - colour H, vvs
  • 20 rubies - approx. 1.6mm in diameter
  • 3 ruby drops - approx. 7x5mm

We were so happy with how the Ruby Dreamcatcher turned out that we decided to create a new one: the Sapphire Dreamcatcher in sterling silver and white gold with light blue sapphires!
