When Not To Wear A Necklace

With so much styling advice flying around these days, you sometimes need a few pointers on what NOT to wear, too.

If you’re all about simplifying your life and getting the most out of it (especially when it comes to accessorising), you’ll love this short guide.

Plus, a few quick ideas for those occasions when you actually do need a necklace to finish off your look.

Let’s have some fun:

When Not To Wear A Necklace

1. with a “busy” top

If your top already has embellishments, trims or decorations, it’s usually best to let it shine all by itself.

2. with super-sized, fluffy sweaters

When it comes to these, there’s enough going on on top. Fall back on your favourite rings instead. And a delicate midi skirt!

3. with layered tops

A shirt under a cool sweater needs no extra embellishments to looks fresh - the juxtaposition of colours and textures is enough.

4. with turtlenecks

You could pull it off, but at the risk of looking matronly. Opt for super-sized earrings to draw attention to the face instead.

5. with oversized bow blouses

No explanation necessary.

When To Wear A Necklace

1. with off-the-shoulder tops or blouses

They leave quite a bit of space up top that could use a focal point. For extra style points, layer necklaces of different lengths, chokers or add a delicate bandana scarve.

2. with V-neck tops (bonus points if they’re tie-front) and dresses

A long, dainty necklace will look good with a V-neck… anything!

3. with oversized, unbuttoned shirts

Paired with a fine necklace, this is the definition of effortless.

4. with bralets and cami tops

Perfect for a casual look, cami tops and bralets can easily be elevated with a few strategically layered necklaces.

5. with crop tops

Pair a necklace and a long cardigan on top for a chic look!

A necklace (any necklace, no matter how long or short) will attract attention to your décolleté, face and chest.

So wear one when the look just wouldn’t work without it.

And, when in doubt, remember that Coco Chanel said it best: “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”
